Our family farm was founded with the desire to preserve nature and grow healthy food for our family. Our story goes back to 2016 when we decided to go organic, and since then, we have been committed to this practice as we believe it is the key to maintaining a healthy environment and producing quality food.

Andrej is a down-to-earth realist who enjoys creating things with his hands. Whether it's a new field accessory, a biocharcoal stove, a greenhouse, or work around the house, his determination, military discipline, and "always finding a solution" attitude have driven our farm.

After three years of working in a very fast-paced city, I had enough. I was mentally and physically exhausted every day. I began to lose authentic contact with myself, my family, and nature. I knew this could not continue in the long run. I started my own project on the inherited farm—growing organic vegetables. I bought all the necessary tools, such as various hoes, a greenhouse, a hand seeder, and other equipment. I fenced off the fields, read gardening books, and listened to farmers on YouTube about how they successfully started their gardening businesses. When almost everything was ready (after the COVID ordeal), I quit my job and started farming.

It's not always easy—it takes a lot of physical work to succeed. Weather conditions are not always in our favor, and natural pests attack our vegetables from all directions. But all the challenges we face are worth it. We are doing good for our Mother Earth, for the well-being of people and animals, and the environment. I like living in harmony with nature because it allows me to reconnect with myself. Our goal is to live self-sufficiently and sustainably by growing a variety of healthy food, generating our own electricity, and reducing costs in all areas of life.

Urška is always full of creative ideas, which sometimes need grounding and time to come to fruition. She enjoys creating in the kitchen, with words, with colors, and loves to dance and sing. Educated as a professor with a master's degree in Slovene studies and comparative literature, she chose this path because of her love for books and writing educational stories and poems. She is also passionate about helping children develop their talents and abilities as naturally as possible through play.

As a child, I lived in a village in a family of seven, which I remember very fondly. My best memories are connected to nature, like the smell of dried grass when we made hay, stacking firewood, pruning vines, picking berries, and making jams. We also grew large fields of our own food every year and stored it for the winter. We helped our mother with marinating and baking, and for the holidays, we baked several loaves of bread in a bread oven. We also had horses, which I loved. I spent time in the meadows creating art, writing, photographing, and reading. This was my natural childhood, for which I am very grateful. We frequently went hiking, and I remember a night hike to Trdinov vrh in the snow with torches. With three sisters and a brother, I was never bored, and we often played board games and learned naturally.

After finishing technical high school, I went to study in Ljubljana, where I lived for eight years. The urban environment always felt foreign and cold to me. During weekends, I couldn't wait to return home to the natural environment. I wanted to continue my life in nature, where I could hear myself and create. God sent Andrej my way, who spent his youth in Dolge Brdo caring for cows on an inherited farm. When he first brought me here, I said, "Yes, this is where I want to live and create." Just a few days later, we got married, combining our stories into one common path.

We have been following this path for six years, and our son Vidvan has been with us for four years.

Vidvan is a creative, lively, curious, and bright boy who likes to get involved in all activities. Through playing on the farm, he develops his brain, motor skills, sense of work, and naturally develops an understanding of life and its laws.

 

We combined our talents and abilities, and this is how the story of Sušnik Ecological Farm was born.
